JR PCM10X Radio Review - Page 2
Hakim Tung

Switch on the radio and first thing you are presented with is the main screen. This shows the battery voltage, model number and modulation, model name, stopwatch, trims position, total usage timer, LCD contrast adjustment and a cool feature called “SERVO HOLD”. Press this button and all servos on the heli hold at their last position whilst you make any adjustments to the radio. Press the “ACT” button to reactive the servos. A “SEL” button is also presented to show trims in percentages instead of tabs. All programming in the 10X is done via touch screen.

Press the “ENTER” button to enter the function mode screen. You can access the various radio functions via direct inputting of each assigned function number or press “D.LIST” to access the complete menu with the mentioned input numbers. “+”, “-“ and “PAGE” keys aid in navigation. Once you choose the function you want just key in the assigned number, press “ENTER” and the software takes you in.

A host of basic functions such as servo reverse, travel adjust/ATV/endpoint adjustments, dual rates, throttle hold, throttle curves, pitch curves, tail curves and timer are available.

Apart from these advanced functions such as sub-trim adjustments, automatic dual rates, mixes, swashplate mixing, servo monitor, failsafe/hold, trim offset, data transfer and keyboard lock are also available.

A couple of mixes that I find invaluable are the AILERON TO THROTTLE MIX and ELEVATOR TO THROTTLE MIX. This function instructs the radio to automatically send a throttle increase whenever aileron or elevator stick movement is applied. The amount of throttle increase is adjustable depending on how much you program in. This is especially useful if you don’t use a governor to keep the head speed up whilst you’re throwing the heli around. A RUDDER TO THROTTLE MIX is also available.

The 10X has a “SERVO MONITOR” function whereby the radio sends signals to the servos making them move either quickly or slowly. This is useful to visually inspect the servo movements to see if there are any blank spots that may indicate either broken gears or a malfunctioning servo. The servo monitor also visually displays each of the ten servo position, which is helpful during setups.

Conclusions
Lift the PCM 10X radio and you can feel that this is a serious piece of kit. The price also guarantees that little bit of exclusivity. The 10X is beautifully made and everything about it has quality written all over it. The functions presented are more than I will ever use for my flying and a lesser radio would work just as well for me. In my opinion Futaba’s new 9-channel radio (9C) provides a very good alternative. However, if you take your helis seriously and your pocket allows it, then do yourself a favor and get a 10X. This is a radio that will take you through beginner to advanced stages without any further upgrades. I have yet to meet someone who has been disappointed with this baby.
